Hillel Brings a Southern Twist to Shabbat in Reno

The students of Hillel of Northern Nevada hosted their first Southern Themed Shabbat on October 15 at a new location last Friday evening. Instead of the usual room at the Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada Reno, the students of Hillel congregated in a glass enclosed patio area behind the Knowledge Center. Since Hillel member Zachary Jacoby would be performing in the University play “To Kill A Mockingbird” later that night, it was decided by Hillel Student President Liza Abrams and the student board to make the theme of the Shabbat southern style.

The menu consisted of fried chicken prepared by Hillel board member Rachel Katz, potatoes, biscuits, collard greens, and watermelon.  All this was accompanied by a short service, Dvar Torah, and Shabbat prayers led by Zach Alexander, Director of Hillel of Northern Nevada.

“The food was delicious,” said Matthew Levin, Hillel Board member and AEPi brother who attended the event.  “It was a great twist on traditional Shabbat food.  Plus, we still got the Shabbat experience that we come to Hillel for with our friends!”

The event saw 45 students in attendance, including 5 new Freshman who have heard about Hillel from friends and through campus recruitment.
