Welcome to the Yiddishe Theatre
Yiddish is experiencing a renaissance and Jews all over the world are reclaiming and reviving the language of their ancestors. Welcome to the Yiddishe Theatre will explore the history of Yiddish theatre in both Europe and North America through close engagement with Yiddish plays combined with historical context. Biblical and Talmudic stories have dramatic elements sprinkled with dialogue. Theatre was generally disapproved by Rabbi and Clergy for the actor taking on the presence of another person. Women were not permitted to perform in the theatre. All roles were played by men.
